Founding Story
Carlisle Collection ( was founded in 1981 but was acquired by Tom James Company in 2012. The Tom James Company states that it is “the world's largest manufacturer and retailer of custom men's clothing, and Royal Spirit Limited, of Hong Kong, Carlisle's largest manufacturer of women's clothes.” Carlisle Collection is based out of New York City.

1981: Opening

Founded in 1981, Carlisle begins operations with 100 Consultants offering a collection of approximately 85 pieces. Today, more than 1500 Consultants and associates present a new collection to their clients each season. Each of Carlisle's collections (Spring, Summer, Fall and Holiday) are comprised of more than 400 pieces.

1982: First Trunk Show

With the launch of the Carlisle's Spring collection, our Wardrobe Consultants across the country begin setting up their home-based trunk shows, taking appointments, and showcasing the line.

1990: Creation of Carlisle's Luxurious Manhattan Showroom

Our NYC-based Wardrobe Consultants have difficulty using their apartments for showcasing the Carlisle line. A sumptuous, penthouse space for our NYC-based Wardrobe Consultants is created to use for their appointments, and Robert Denning of Denning & Fourcade is commissioned to remodel the NYC showroom. Today, it is a destination shopping location for women around the world who book their appointments weeks in advance each season.

1998: Fabric of Hope

Carlisle decides to focus its philanthropic efforts on one deserving organization: the Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. Each year thereafter, Carlisle designers create a scarf that is given to all customers who make a donation to our Fabric of Hope program. Thus far, Carlisle has raised over $1.7 million ( for Komen for the Cure.

2001: New York Distribution Center

Our state-of-the-art, 140,000 square-foot distribution and logistics center opens. This new center provides speedier and more accurate handling and shipping of orders.

2005: Creation of Carlisle's Per Se line

Per Se is an exciting collection for a new generation of Carlisle clients. Like the Carlisle Collection, Per Se allows our clients to express their individuality through unique pieces that have the versatility to be worn in a variety of contexts. Now Per Se offers a variation on style—contemporary, fresh, urbane—that gives our clients even more options, whether they choose to wear the Per Se line on its own or as an accent to pieces from the Carlisle Collection.

2009: Carlisle's Per Se line expands offering over 200 pieces each season

The success of the Per Se line demonstrates that women want and enjoy wardrobes that offer even more choices for everyday, elegant dressing. Carlisle expandes Per Se into a full-fledged line with over 200 pieces and now sells the line in our Carlisle showrooms and trunk shows.

2010: Carlisle Showroom Launched in Greenwich, CT

The success of the Per Se line demonstrates that women want and enjoy wardrobes that offer even more choices for everyday, elegant dressing. Carlisle expandes Per Se into a full-fledged line with over 200 pieces and now sells the line in our Carlisle showrooms and trunk shows.
